About Me

Greetings from Mary Pitts!

This is my fifth year at Sherman Elementary, and I love being a part of this community. I am part of the Special Education Team teaching grades K-5. Most of my students qualify for academic support, but I also give instruction in social, behavioral skills and personal management.

I began my teaching career with Millard Public Schools as a classroom teacher. My husband and I raised five children, and I was lucky enough to stay home with them for ten years. In 2006, I returned to full time teaching in OPS.

My B.S. degree was earned from UNO. I double majored in elementary and special education. I earned a M.Ed in Curriculum and Instruction from Doane College. I earned my ESL endorsement from Concordia University.  Currently, I am working on an endorsement in Gifted Education from Belin Blank Center at University of Iowa.  My focus is working with the twice exceptional learners.  These are students who might have learning and/or behavior needs, as well as areas of giftedness.

Your questions or concerns are very important to me, and I look forward to working with you and your child. Below you will find information regarding your student in Special Education.

*IEP’S (Individualized Education Plans) are updated early. A notification letter will be sent home to arrange for the IEP conference.

*IEP goals and objectives are updated quarterly. Parents/guardians will receive a copy of the progress report with the student report card.

*Some students are provided special education services in the general setting as well as in the Resource Room.

*Every three years special education students are required to be re-evaluated to see if they continue to qualify for services.
